Kanamara Matsuri-2010: Annual Shinto Fertility Festival in Japan

It was in the month April this year in 2010 when Kanamara Matsuri festival was held with great pomp and cheers at Kawasaki in Japan. It is an annual Shinto fertility festival held every year at Kanayama Shrine in Japan. Kanamara Matsuri really holds interesting aspects for visitors internationally. In this festival penis is treated as the central theme and is displayed wooden penis of enormous size everywhere during the celebration. Penis is also displayed everywhere in decorations, carved vegetables and mikoshi parade. The Kanayama Shrine is the hosting center of Kanamara. It is a penis venerating building that is held in high esteem by prostitutes. They believe that praying at this shrine will protect them from sexually transmitted diseases.

It is said that Kanayama Shrine holds divine powers. Praying here during Kanamara Matsuri festival ensures prosperity in business, success, good marriage, easy birth of children and mutual harmony between married couples. There is a legend according to which a demon having sharp teeth, hid in the vagina of a young girl. The young girl sought aid of a black smith who made an iron penis for her. The demon’s teeth were broken with this iron phallus which was enshrined as a sacred symbol. The festival holds great attraction among tourists and visitors coming from international destinations.

New York Labor day carnival

The 43rd annual New York Labor day carnival, which is the biggest cultural festivals of the New York City, will be held from 2nd to 6th Sept, 2010. It is a West Indian carnival festival. Some of the events which will be held are – the Benefit concert for Haiti will be held on 2nd Sept. It’s a great music show.

On Sept 3rd, Stay in School concert will be held. Its main features are dance, hip-hop, Steel Pan, Karate, Spoken Word, Fashion show and much more. On 4th Sept, there will be Junior Carnival. The parade will be held from 9 am to 3 pm. On 5th Sept, there will be Dimanche Gras from 7-1 am. Its main features are Stilt Walkers, King and Queen Band competition, Rhythm Masters, Kambule Calypso show.

There will be a musical tribute to Charlie. The music will be by Sunshine band. One can save time and also avoid lines by online booking of tickets at www.wiadca.com.

On 6th Sept, there will be carnival where there will be a parade of bands from 11 am to 6 pm. The parade will start from Eastern Parkway and end on Flatbush Avenue. The main features will be costume bands, masqueraders and also moko jumbies, floats and much more. Alcoholic beverages are not allowed in the parade.
