Boston Carnival 2010 Report

The Boston carnival was held in August, 2010 in Boston, Massachusetts, United States. A huge number of Caribbean communities – participants and people attended the Trinidad style carnival. The main features of this colorful carnival was exotic costumes and Soca music which was mind blowing. The main highlights are color, costumes and culture. The best in music, art and dance are exhibited. Each day there was a display of costumes along with steel drum bands. There was also dancing with the bands.

Steelband Jamboree was held on 11 July at White Stadium. On August 15, Ecumenical Service was held. It was a salutation to the stalwarts of the Boston Carnival. The carnival day began with “Breaking of the Day” in which the participants wore costumes which were home-made. They acted out various portrayals.

On 22 August, Kiddies carnival was held. The focus was on young children wearing colorful costumes. It is a competition with winners chosen and recognized. On 26 August, the King and Queen show was held. The costly and intricate costumes are judged on the basis of visual presentation and performance. A competition of musicians, Steelband Panorama was held. On 28 August J’Ouvert along with a costume street parade was held. Bands and masquerades filled the streets with colors and sounds of the carnival.

Carnival Acireale Sicily

An exciting and beautiful event, the fun and involving carnival of Acireale is a historical festivity and is held in Acireale in Sicily, Italy. The annual carnival will be held from Jan-Feb 2011. The main event is the big parade. There are14 platoons which are of long haul sizes with incredible setups. There is fantasy animation such as platoon having its own generator. It creates a light show along with smoke. On the other end, there are satirical hints aimed at politicians, especially Berlusconi.

There are large colorful Allegorical floats made of Paper-Mache depicting celebrities and politicians, and also animals along with fantasy creatures. They are made lively by mechanical movements and also arms. Made on mobile platforms, they illuminate internally. Thus, they are unique in beauty. There are also flower-decorated floats. Made with a large number of flowers, they are shaped into specific figures and are also animated and lightened.

There are a large number of entertainers in this carnival from Italy and the whole world. These include the dancers and masked performers. There are also playful marching bands which create music through the use of everyday kitchen utensils. The crowd remains free, roaming around the circuit without any barriers. There is participation of the onlookers in paper confetti and also the silly string fun.

One can visit exhibitions and paintings. There are musical and also theatrical performances. There are tournaments and many other events. Dressed up in fancy costumes, people enjoy themselves and have a great time. Especially for teenagers, it’s a great opportunity for having fun and also joking on others. The foreigners are an easy target with their heads banged with plastic club. The carnival of Acireale is attended by tourists from Italy and the whole world who actively participate in the events.

Carnival of Putignano, Puglia

The carnival of Putignano is held in the town of Putignano which is situated 40 km to the south of Bari, Puglia, Italy. The carnival begins on the day after Christmas. It ends one day earlier to the Ash Wednesday. Amongst the longest and the oldest carnivals of Italy, the carnivals roots can be traced to the Middle Age.

The festival begins with the tradition of Propaggini, a feast on 26th December. The week long festival has four carnival parades which end on Shrove Tuesday with a gigantic process. The carnivals protagonist is Farinella who is a famous character, a jester. He wears a suit in green and white color, a three pointed hat, an obligatory mask, his shoe ends are with bells. ‘Farinella’ is a kind of ancient food. The agenda of huge platforms is satirical. The “little man” expresses opinion on subjects such as politics and people in power.

Starting on 17th January, Thursday feasts start when every Thursday; actors take up different themes and tell rhymes about them. On 2nd February, there is the bears feast. This is the “Candelora” day. On this day, the upcoming spring season shows its first signs.

Ending on the Shrove Tuesday, the carnivals death is celebrated by the people. The funeral is symbolized by a papier-mâché pig.

OK TO BEER FEST, Double Century Celebrations of Oktoberfest 2010, continues in Munich

The 2010 Oktoberfest is being enjoyed in Munich, Bavaria, Germany from September 18 to October 4. World’s largest Beer festival event of Germany, the Oktoberfest is an important annual celebration attended by about six million visitors from every corner of the world. The Munich Oktoberfest continues for 17 or 18 days which includes Octobers first Sunday. In 2010, the festival lasts till the first Monday of the month of October which celebrates the 200 years jubilee. Oktoberfest is held in the place named Theresienwiese which means field or meadow. In short it is called Wiesn and is located near the centre of Munich, and the South East to main train station.

Oktoberfest offers to the visitor’s traditional hearty cuisine. This includes Hendl, Schweinsbraten, Haxn, Steckerlfisch, Würstl, knodel, Kasspatzn, Reiberdatschi, Blaukraut, Rokeg, Weisswurst.

The main features of the Oktoberfest are merrymaking and the drinking of beer. Oktoberfest has a traditional opening. This includes a salute of ten guns, and tapping of first Oktoberfest beer by the Mayor of Munich who passes it to the Minister-President. Folk costume parades are held. Floats and also the beer wagons which are decorated are drawn by the brewery horses through the streets. In 2010, the anniversary of the Oktoberfest, a horse race will be conducted in historical costumes. During the festival, traditionally the visitors wear Bavarian hats containing goat hair which is highly valued and expensive. Fourteen main tents serve beer or wine. The beer tents play quiet music such as traditional wind music.
