An annual festival, the Carnival of Venice is held in Venice, Italy. The hub of the two-week long carnival is St Mark’s Square. The next Carnival of Venice will be held from 26 February to 8 March, 2011. The two aspects of this carnival are the masks and costumes of 15-16th century. The masks allowed the people to remain anonymous, the lower classes mixing with the upper ones. Made of leather or papier-mâché, a mask is a crucial feature of Venetian carnival. Nowadays, they are mostly made with gesso and gold leaf. They are hand painted with natural feathers and gems for decoration. The main types of masks are Bauta, Moretta and Volto.

The costumes are a copy of the dresses of wealthier Venetians and are expensive. A family treasure, they passed on to next generations. During the carnival, people can be seen in their costumes in the streets, posing for the photographs. During the carnival, one can experience sightseeing the beautiful city of Venice. On one of the days, there is the gondola parade on the Grande canal. One can cross the Rialto Bridge, enjoying the St Mark’s Square architecture and visit the museums. Different cultural events as well as performances are held. There are many arts including ballet, theatre and music. Visitors from the whole world attend this carnival.
