Navratri literally means “nine nights” is a popular Hindu festival mainly originating from the state of Gujarat. Celebrated throughout the country with dance, worship and exchanging happiness is the prime goal of this divine festival. To celebrate people from cities, nearby villages gather in an open space to respect the feminine divinity, also called as Shakti in Hindi language.

Navratri festival is incomplete without the dance festival where people are excited to dance in groups. This dance form is known as Ras Garba, and when dancers take wooden sticks as a prop then the form is called as Dandiya. This dance form originated from the religious stories and relationship between Lord Krishna and Gopis. Worship of Lord Krishna and emotions of Gopis for him is represented through music and dance during Navratri celebration.

Navratri is celebrated during the Hindu month of Ashwin; it begins on the first day of fortnight of Ashwin in Hindu calendar. Generally this festival coincides with the ending of rainy season. On the tenth day is celebrated Dasara/Vijayadashmi.

Garba the dance festival that is the prime focus of this occasion begins at late in nights near Gujarat and other states too. Religious aspect during Garba consist mainly of Shakti Peetha: such as Pavagadh, Ambaji etc. try to visit any village to any city like Vadodara during Garba and you will realize the effect of enjoying the festivities of Garba dance and music all 9 days.

During Garba a Goddess shrine is beautifully adorned with jewelry and religious dresses by every community to indicate the beginning of the festival. Every shrine has a coconut, coin and betelnut placed in an earthen pot. The 9 nights are divided to worship Durga, Laxmi and Saraswati all representing feminine Power. After this the puja starts with religious mantras and chants for respective goddess. After puja people are ready to hit the dance ground with the thrilling music and traditional Dandiya and Garba beats. It is a common sight to spot people dancing with fire, flames and swords to celebrate joy and strength. People start dancing in circles and enter trance as the night passes with the tempo of music increasing gradually. Imagine dancers in a circle where the energy of universe is represented. This festival ends on tenth day with celebrating Dasara by preparing and eating snacks such as fafda – jalebi etc. And thus celebrating the creative force of nature and unleashed Goddess power comes together on Navratri. Though a Hindu festival, but any individual can join in to celebrate Navratri to experience joy, fun and happiness keeping aside the thought to which religion he belongs.
