La Tomatina – World Famous Festival in the Mediterranean city of Buñol in eastern Spain on August 31st, 2011

La Tomatina is the famous food fight festival which is celebrated in the city of Buñol in eastern Spain. This festival is considered as huge festival fight of tomatoes which is celebrated every year on the last Wednesday of August every year and more than 30000 people take part. They start this festival in the early morning when people are coming up to take their breakfast along with wines.

Till 11 am everyone is lost in their own world by having their drinks and then after five rockets filled with tomatoes are sent into the sky. With this point everyone including man, woman and children are turning themselves in to the slinging war of tomatoes till 1 pm. There are also some rules attached to this festival is that one has to squash the tomatoes before throwing it to other and are also not allowed to throw anything other than tomatoes.

In this festival total quantity of about 125,000 thousand kilos of ripe tomatoes are squashed and thrown. All the people who are taking part are requested to wear safety goggle along with gloves. This event continues for an hour and comes to an end when the water cannon are fired up to stop it and no tomatoes were thrown at that point.

La Tomatina is a world-famous festival of Buñol in the Mediterranean city Valencia in Spain and is held each year on the last Wednesday in the month of August. Many thousand tourists across the world reach here to enjoy it. Bunol is thirty miles from Valencia. The main feature of this festival is the tomato fight where no winners are expected, only having fun is important. A night before the fight, the narrow streets of the city are lined and filled with tomatoes. There is enjoyment with wine and food. Next day, at the beginning of the fight, water is thrown at the crowd. Then, red ripe tomatoes are thrown at each other. Before throwing, they have to be squashed. The fight lasts about an hour. Launching of a rocket signifies the end of the fight. A wash is taken at the riverbank. Clothes worn are thrown away. People clean the streets and the city once again looks clean.

Traditionally, the dress for women is in black while the men avoid wearing shirts. Clothes for the return journey should be kept. Goggles should be brought to protect the eyes and also proper footwear with a good grip. The La Tomatina continues for a week, a few interesting features being food, street parties, parades, dance and fireworks. People from all over the world, about 20000-50000 gather and witness this tomato fight having a great time. The unique tomato fight of this fun-filled festival is televised live in Spain.
