Vital glossary for the biggest and most humble event of Samba in Rio Carnival

You may think that the Rio Carnival is only the event for enjoying and having fun with dance, singing and night parties. But, in real terms it will be a sincere event which will comprise of several Samba schools into this competition. The top twelve schools of Samba groups perform in the vent to win and there are mostly ten criteria to be judge in the last two days of the Carnival at Sambodromo. Going with their alphabetical patterns, these terms include Alegoria which means props and floats, a percussion instrument namely Bateria which ensembles in the school itself.

Comissao de frente refers to the front layer of 15-20 people saluting the public and Conjunto decides the overall performance of the Samba parading. Enredo (the story plot or theme of parade), Evolucao (every feature like spontaneity, credibility, creativity and speed of the Samba parade), Fantasia (costumes), Harmonia (genuineness of the rhythm), Mestre-sala (master of ceremonies trying to attract the public), Porta-banderia (the court dressed female flag carrier) and Samba-enredo referring to the theme song are the other terms. In such an elaborate competition and awesome events, expats and visitors should be aware of these terms.

According to the Portela’s bateria 2010 Carnival, there are some other terms which find its use in the whole parading event. Referring and grasping these terms in a moment will surely benefit you. Abre-alas (the section opener), Ala (a section of Samba school dressed in the same costume and performing similar choreography), Ala das Baianas (traditions override from the older section of ladies dressed in Bahia style), Avenida (Sapucai Avenue where Sambodrome is held), Barracao (industrial workshop where costumes and dresses are made), Batucada (instant drum playing gathering) and Bloco (organized revelers troupe) are very commonly used terms.

Canarvalesco (parade designer), Cidade do samba (complex containing barracoes of Grupo Especial), Concentrao(pre gathering of people for parade), Destaque (group of especially costumed VIPs), Puxador (lead singer for the theme song), Quadra (Smaba court), Rainha de Bateria (reputed actress queen to ensemble the drum), Repique or repinique (two headed intense pitching drum) and Sambodromo (place of parade organization) are few more terms which are often used in the Brazilian dictionary. Surdo is considered as the heart of bacteria refers to the bass drum and Velha guarda means to the great section of Samba parade which basically comprise of top directors, school founders, elders and composers. They are very well dressed in suits and are usually men.
