But now it is a place for everyone and anybody can participate and enjoy the event. So, why wait? Get ready to make your mark at the lively event of fun and true enjoyment.
The history of Rio Carnival goes long back around 1723. The Portuguese refugees from the islands of Cabo Verde and Acores started it. The idea behind the carnival was to get everyone drenched. The people used to carry their own buckets and lime and went on to the streets where they can victimize other people and throw water at them. The carnival was popular that even the royals used to become a part of it.
Ze Pereira made a great contribution to the vast history of the Rio Carnival. Jose Nogueira de Azevedo, a Portuguese shoemaker contributed it in the XIX Century. Jose used to go out on the streets with his friends and used to play drums, whistles on every Mondays of the carnival. On the other hand, the Grandes sociedades or the Great Societies used to arrange parades, which made its debut in 1855 in the presence of the ruler. This parade consisted of 80 aristocrats who used to wear luxury costumes and march with flowers along the music. The three most popular groups were Tenentes do Diabo, Fenianos and democraticos.
Cordao Carnavalesco is another fun activity that is associated with the history of Rio Carnival. This activit debuted in 1870. The main characters in this activity included kings, queens, witches, dancers and they performed according to the dresses they wear.
All these fun activities in the Rio Carnival helps the people of Rio to forget about the problems that they are facing in their day-to-day life and have some fun. Though, the Rio Carnival is very popular among the locals but still there are some communities, which opposes it. But the communities, which are in favor of having fun, enjoy it with full enthusiasm and in the same way they enjoy their soccer and samba.
Rio Carnival is famous around the globe. Thousands of people wearing colorful dresses and marching is a wonderful scene. But very few people know that all these colorful dresses and parades are because of the annual parade competition. Fourteen of the top most samba schools fight it out to win the competition. The parameters of judging are, the music, drum section, and synchronization. It is very serious competition. Every year, the second division topper is promoted in the first division whereas the bottom team in the first division goes into the second division. The second division teams perform on Saturdays whereas the first division teams takes up the center stage on Sundays & Mondays.
Every school performs their act in 60-80 minutes. Vehicles and a group of around 200 people accompany every performance and each member wears a different costume. If you want to participate, you can buy a costume and join the group.
If you want to participate, you can buy the costume of any of the teams and then just wait with them for your chance to come. I was lucky enough to participate with Alegria da Zona Sul 5 years ago. We were dressed in red & white outfits wearing golden shoes, waiting outside the Sambódromo for our turn.
The parade kicked off with the fireworks. Our marching started. With drums playing, we were singing the team song and soon we entered the stadium. We were being seen by almost ten thousand people. Our parade lasted for 60 minutes. The stadium was full of colors, music playing and fireworks.
If you really want to enjoy the Carnival, you must take the experience of the parades buy marching along one of the many teams. It is a lifetime experience.
